Fangtastic: Ballet Quad Cities' "Dracula"

10/14/2013

Domingo Rubio left no doubt that his Count Dracula was in charge during Friday’s performance of Ballet Quad Cities’ Dracula at Moline's Scottish Rite Cathedral. (The production ended its run on Saturday.) From his bat-like entrance – with the dancer slowly flapping his black cape from front to back as he made his way through the darkened auditorium – to his death, Rubio’s Dracula never seemed controlled by anyone, and that includes choreographer Deanna Carter. Rubio gave the impression that his Dracula wasn’t moving because Carter gave him predetermined choreography, but because it was the way he wanted to move.

Scare up a bloody beautiful ballet

You can't go wrong with the Ballet Quad Cities annual fall classic "Dracula." This weekend is the second year the timeless gothic tale of love, lust, horror and death is being unfurled in its sexy, melodramatic production at Moline's Scottish Rite Cathedral.

And Saturday night’s entertainment delivered a mixture of sensuality, flirtatiousness, and exquisite beauty, culminating in a romantic experience that left me doe-eyed with emotions linked to love.

Maggie Huling's maternal grandfather recently died in December, but his love of dance and jazz lives on in her original choreography for this Saturday's "Love Stories" byBallet Quad Cities.

"I attribute a lot of my artistic instincts to growing up around my grandfather," the 30-year-old native of Kalamazoo, Mich., said this week. "A lot of my movement in the piece comes from me dancing around with my grandfather."
