Rock Island selects its top citizens

The city of Rock Island has announced its 2015 Citizens of the Year in eight categories.

Organization Category: Ballet Quad-Cities, which has provided professional ballet performances for almost 20 years. Over the last year, the group held dance classes at the Rock Island Academy, providing the lessons for free to students of all different ages, races, genders and dance abilities culminating with a performance at their annual Ballet in the Park.

The city of Rock Island has announced winners in individual categories in the annual Citizen of the Year awards, and the overall winner will be announced on Aug. 24.

- Organization: Ballet Quad Cities. During the last year, Ballet Quad-Cities held dance classes at the Rock Island Academy and gave students free lessons that ended with a performance at the annual Ballet in the Park. 

Aspiring dancers get paid to grow in Metro Arts program

Fiona McGrath Nagle and Teleah Thomas love to express themselves through the hypnotic, graceful power of dance.
Miss Nagle, 17, a recent Rock Island High School graduate, and Miss Thomas, a 16-year-old Pleasant Valley High student, are two of the eight female dancers who are paid apprentices in this year's Quad City Arts Metro Arts summer employment program. The public is invited to see them perform in the Metro Arts Showcase scheduled for 5 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Boys and Girls Club, 1122 5th Ave., Moline.

Choreographer Courtney Lyon outdid herself for Ballet Quad Cities’ Love Stories featuring Romeo & Juliet. This piece, presented in two acts, enraptured me during Friday performance, and it was beautifully bizarre – and I mean “bizarre” as a positive, as the moves, lines, and compositions Lyon created for each scene were often stunning and always interesting, eliciting from me multiple gasps of appreciation.

Student School Matinees

Each season, Ballet Quad Cities invites students to join us for special educational matinee performances. The mission of these performances is to provide the experience of fully-produced performances of world-class ballet with elaborate costumes and scenery for a minimal cost for students – a magical experience they will never forget! To enhance this live ballet experience, we also offer an in-school pre-performance educational program that includes engaging activities for the classroom.
